Does the tv do it automatically or does someone sit there and write out everything each person is saying? Well, actually this is a great work at home job that many different people do.

If you love watching videos and making money, a closed captioning job may be for you! Check out what it is and the best places to apply below.

What is Closed Captioning?

If you haven’t figured it out yet, closed captioning is the words that go along the bottom of the screen that you can read.

If you want to know what the job entails, think transcription. Unlike an audio file that you listen to, you watch a video and transcribe what each person is saying.

Not only is it fun to read lips, but you are helping the deaf community by making it easier for them to read what is going on.

There are two types of captioning jobs; offline closed captioning and real-time captioning.

Offline Closed Captioning

Offline closed captioning is just like transcription. Instead of an audio file, you will watch pre-recorded TV programs or movies.

These recordings will not be live. Offline captioners will transcribe a program first into a script then use the script to caption the video.

In some cases, you may already have a script. However, the key to closed captioning is that you will not be working on it while it is live.

Real-Time Captioning

Real-time captioning is just as it seems; it is in real time! This can make the job a little trickier to accomplish.

Most real-time captioning is done at news broadcasts, sporting events, or any place that is going live.

As you could imagine, real-time captioning will require you to be Speedy Gonzales. However, it does pay a lot better. Many real-time captioners can make 6-figures each year.

In order to get this line of work, you need to have some schooling. You will need to be trained at

a school that offers captioning courses.

How do you become a Closed Captioner?
