The new wave of the future is micro tasks workers. There are so many sites out there that offer micro tasks to people like us. It’s unbelievable.
If you are not new to the game, you’ve heard of the most popular one, Amazon Mechanical Turk or what people call mturk for short.
If you are new to game, let’s dive into not only Amazon Mechanical Turk, but alternatives too.
What is Amazon Mechanical Turk?
Amazon Mechanical Turk is the least talked about portion of Amazon. It’s fairly underrated too, if you want to be completely honest.
Amazon Mechanical Turk is one of the top micro task’s sites out there on the net currently.
What are Micro Tasks?
If you don’t know what micro tasks are, you will be confused with how this all works.
Micro-tasks are small tasks such as data entry, survey, research, and other little things. Companies and even universities put out these micro-tasks for you to work on.
In the long run, it saves them money and they get the information they need, which in return gives you jobs. It’s a win-win for the entire field.
Now, back to Amazon Mechanical Turk.

So, Amazon Mechanical Turk is a portion of Amazon that you can work on as a 1099 contractor, also known as an independent contractor.
What’s cool about Amazon Mechanical Turk is that there are a variety of tasks such as, data entry, surveys, research, and many other various things.
You can work whenever you want to. You are not tied down to certain things either. You can pick and choose what you want to work on and who you want to work with.
In return, you will make money. Each micro-task pays a different fee, so you’ll be earning a variety of amounts when working on different projects for different people.
What’s neat about Amazon Mechanical Turk is that you can either get paid through direct deposit into your bank or you can choose to get paid through Amazon gift cards.
Pro-Tip: The direct deposit into your bank is only available to people residing in the United States. People residing outside the United States will only have the option to get paid through Amazon gift cards.
Online Jobs Similar to Amazon Mechanical Turk
If Amazon Mechanical Turk doesn’t sound great enough, you will want to also check out these online jobs like Amazon Mechanical Turk. There are plenty out there and it’s always a good thing to have a variety of micro-tasks sites.
Microworkers
I am not going to lie, Microworkers will probably be the best Amazon Turk alternatives. It’s just as popular as Amazon Mechanical Turk, if you want to be completely honest.
Microworks offers a variety of different tasks including the following:
- Surveys
- Paid to Click (PTC) Advertisements
- Liking and Commenting on Posts
- Searching Keywords
- Writing Reviews
Microworkers pays you through PayPal or Skrill (what was once known as Moneybookers). However, unlike Amazon Mechanical Turk, where you need a $1 to cash out, at Microworkers, you will need a minimum of $9 to cash out.
Another downfall with Microworkers is that for you to get paid, you will have to wait for them to send you a pin in the mail. The pin will be coming from another country, so it will certainly take a bit of time before you receive it.
Clickworker
Ah! Good old Clickworker makes this list.

Let’s back up a second. If you are familiar with search engine evaluations positions, such as LionBridge, Appen, ISoftStone, you’ll love, love, love Clickworker.
Clickworker is not necessarily like the other options on this list. Like I previously stated, it’s very similar to any search engine evaluations.
The premise is still the same, it’s all micro tasks, but the tasks are a little bit different than you would be used to, if you use Amazon Mechanical Turk and the like.
However, with Clickworker, the tasks can be easy and breezy. Majority of people that do Clickworker makes around $9 and up an hour. Now, that’s nothing to sneeze at when looking at micro task work.
OneSpace
OneSpace is another great reputable micro task site to join. What’s great about OneSpace is that they also contract with people all over the world.
A little bit of back story.
OneSpace uses to post their work on Amazon Mechanical Turk. It wasn’t until a few years ago that they decided it was time to branch out and start their very own micro task site for people to work on.
This now allows them to pay their workers directly without having to pay fees directly to Amazon Mechanical Turk.
OneSpace pays their contractors through PayPal, which happens to be something that Amazon Mechanical Turk does not do.
OneSpace offers micro-tasks that includes
- Writing
- Editing
- Photo Tagging
You will want to keep in mind that OneSpace does not always have work. There may be times that you sign in and there is no work available. This is completely normal. They don’t have the volume of work like the other sites.
CrowdFlower
CrowdFlower just like OneSpace was on Amazon Mechanical Turk at one point. Just like OneSpace they migrated off Amazon Mechanical Turk.
Now, you can find CrowdFlower on get paid to (GPT) sites such as Inbox Dollars, Swagbucks, and more.
These tasks include:
- Surveys
- Search Engine Evaluation
- Categorizations
- Writing
You will want to keep in mind that the pay rates for these tasks change very frequently and will differ from platform to platform.
CrowdFlower will pay out on the platform you are using to do their tasks. They are not like OneSpace who branched off to their own platform. They still utilize other platforms just not Amazon Mechanical Turk.
Be Wary of Certain Tasks (Scam Alert)
I want to point out a few things. When picking up tasks especially on Amazon Mechanical Turk and Microworkers, you will want to keep an eye out for spammy ones.
Spammy tasks consist of not following the terms of service (TOS), they are typically unethical.
I do want to point out it will hurt your Amazon Mechanical Turk approval score, you will not want to do that, especially if you want to keep getting good, quality tasks.
When you find these types of scammy and spammy tasks, you will want to report them. Most sites have an option where you can report, please do so. It also helps other workers out and yourself.
What Sites Like Amazon Mechanical Turk That Pay More?
Realistically, if you are looking for a great hourly wage, but you don’t want to sift through the junk on Amazon Mechanical Turk, I would highly recommend signing up and checking out Clickworker.
Out of all the ones I’ve mentioned above, Clickworker is the best. Majority of people, once they get over the learning curve of the platform, can make $9 an hour and up. You will not be able to find that on any of the other platforms.
Love Micro Tasks & Need More?
If the above 4 micro tasks sites (not including Amazon Mechanical Turk) is not enough and you need more to maximize your earnings, you’ll be glad to know that there are many sites out there.
However, you won’t make more than you would at Amazon Mechanical Turk, but they are good alternatives, nonetheless.
- JobBoy
- MiniJobz
- RapidWorkers
- ShortTask
- Smart Crowd
Final Words
If you are looking to supplement your income, I would highly suggest trying out some micro task’s sites. Of course, depending on the site and what you enjoy doing, there is a chance to make part-time and sometimes full-time income.
Keep in mind, there will be a learning curve, so don’t give up if you don’t make quick money right away. It’s all a steady process, you’ll get down soon enough.
