Some days, you just don’t feel like getting dressed. Other days, it may feel too hot, or too cold to want to venture outdoors.

And then there is the factor of flexibility.

While each work from home job offers different amounts of flexibility, it is still something to be desired.

Medical coding or billing is a great job opportunity to do from home. With a bit of training and certification, you can be well on your way to that $50,000 each year. Here is everything you need to know about medical coding and billing!

What is medical coding and billing?

Before you jump on board, you may want to know what medical coding and billing entails.

The process of medical coding is when medical services are converted into universal numeric, or alphanumeric codes.

As a medical coder, it is necessary to have extensive training. Your training will enable you to read and interpret medical charts, as well as determine the code for a variety of different items. Procedures, medical equipment, and diagnoses are just a few examples of things that need coded.

Now, what about medical coding? Is that different?

Absolutely! Once healthcare services have been coded, they must then be billed!

As a medical biller, it will be your job to send coded medical claims off to the insurance companies, or Medicare and Medicaid.

Other duties include verifying eligibility for hospitalizations and treatments, securing referrals and pre-authorizations for medical procedures, and even following up on claims that have gone unpaid.

It’s also important to mention that some places combine both jobs into one. This means that you will take on the responsibilities of both jobs. Learning a patient’s chart. Coding it. Making Verifications. Sending it off to be paid. Fortunately, as a medical biller and coder, your extra responsibilities will also likely bring in extra money!

Do you need a degree for either job?

Are you wondering whether or not you need a degree to become a medical biller or coder? The simple answer is, no, you do not need a degree.

However, for those of you that do have a bachelor’s degree, you will most likely get paid more than those who don’t have the extra schooling.

But wait! Don’t get too excited. Though a degree is not absolutely necessary, these aren’t exactly entry-level jobs.

There is a lot of knowledge to gain before you can just jump into the field.

The best way to receive said knowledge is to get certified through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) is another certification that you can obtain.

Before getting hired for a job, employers will look specifically for either of those certifications.

There are also a few other certifications and degrees that can be beneficial towards your career.

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CPS)

Having these extra certifications will allow you to qualify for certain job opportunities. They look wonderful on your applications. Also, they can sometimes help you make a better salary!

How long are the certification courses?

Pending on which certification or degree you are working on, it can take you anywhere from 6 months, to four years. This time frame also varies, pending how devoted you are to your schooling. It’s a no brainer that if you make it a full-time task, you will complete your studies much sooner.

For those who are looking to get a jump start, you can most likely take your certification exam within 6 months. Though for some people, it’s possible to take an entire year to complete the course.

I recommend you check out CareerStep as a great place to do your training, and get certified.

Their course includes everything you could possibly need, and then some!

What I love about CareerStep is that they will actually help you try to land your first job! One of the biggest struggles after graduating is entering the workfield. Fortunately, CareerStep is there to guide you, as you make the big leap!

Now I also mentioned that your schooling could take up to 4 years. Relax! That’s only the case if you are looking to get an RHIT or RHIA degree.

Keep an eye out for scams

While on the topic of how long certification takes, I want to warn you about the many scams that you may come across.

The thing about medical coding is that there are thousands of different codes to learn. It isn’t something that you can learn overnight. Or even in a month.

If you come across a site that claims to be able to fast track you through the program, don’t even consider it. It is likely a scam that will waste your time, and money.

It is important that you only take your course through an accredited school.

As with any job, the pay varies. On average, you can expect to earn roughly $50,000 annually. Though some remote medical billers and coders have been known to make in excess of $62,00 per year.

Having difficulty finding remote jobs?

Remote medical coding and billing jobs, do exist, but for newbies to the field, they are hard to come across.

No matter what the job, work from home careers often begin as your average job, at a physical location. However, once you prove your experience and worth, many times you can request to work from home.

Not all companies offer the ability to work from home, so if this is something you truly desire, be sure to do some research before accepting a job. There is nothing worse than having your dreams shattered, after it’s too late.

If you have at least 2-3 years of experience, I have a list of six sites to check out, that hire remote medical coders. For those of you that are just starting out, bookmark these pages. Then come back when you are confident, and ready to pursue your work at home job.

#1. AviaCode

AviaCode has over 700 certified medical coders, and works with over $8,800 physicians.

As an employer for AviaCode, you will have the opportunity to enroll in benefits. This includes, a 401k plan, medical and dental insurance, and paid time off, among many others.

This is pretty amazing, as most work from home jobs are freelance, which don’t offer such perks.

Three years of experience is a must. Once you have the experience under your belt, fill out the form, and list your credentials, as well as why you think you’re the perfect candidate.

#2. Conifer Health

At Conifer Health you can search through hundreds of medical jobs every day. New jobs are posted as they are needed. So definitely bookmark their link!

You can scroll through list, or to make it quicker, use the search function. Easily narrow down the results by typing, “telecommute,” or “remote,” in the location bar, if you want to work from home.

Be sure to have 3 years experience, or you will not be able to land a job through them. However, if you have the minimum experience, they will keep your resume in their database, for future opportunities.

#3. iMedX

iMedX is a popular site among those looking for remote medical jobs.

They offer a variety of work from home gigs, from medical transcription to coding and auditing services.

See what they have to offer, once you have a minimum of three years experience.

#4. Maxim Health Information

Maxim Health Information is a popular website among those looking for various medical jobs.

Today, they have over 8,000 healthcare related jobs available.

You will notice that if you wish to find a medical coding or billing job there, you must be able to show that you have three years of experience.

Many of the job postings you find are not going to be remote, but there are some sprinkled in, here and there.

Also, you can find both part-time, and full-time job listings! This is great for those of you who are looking for a little bit of flexibility.

#5. nThrive

Searching for a medical coding or billing job is easy at nThrive.

You can find an assortment of different job postings, from time to time.

Just type in “medical coder,” to the search bar. Then simply add the word “remote” to the location box, to find work from home jobs. Keep in mind, they are not always available, so check back often.

Also, if you are struggling to find a remote job here, consider searching for a local job. Then inquire about whether or not it could possibly lead to a work from home position, later on!

You never know which doors may lead you in the right direction!

#6. The Coding Network

The magic number, certainly seems to be 3 with most of these sites.

As with many of the others, you must have a minimum of three years experience, before applying at TCN.

You also must be a resident of the United States.

One thing to note with The Coding Network, is that you can only apply to three specialties. So if you have multiple certifications, you can only choose three to apply for. So choose wisely!

Though you are limited as to what you can apply for, I really like how they will allow you to apply when they are not hiring.  In fact, many of the postings will specify that they will hang onto your resume for future consideration!
