9 Online Test Scoring Jobs You Can Do From Your Very Own Home!

So you’ve decided to work from home, but aren’t sure exactly which stay at home gig is most suitable for you.

Your desires include something that is actually going to make you money, without completely wasting your time.

Being glued to the phone isn’t something you want to do.

Nor do you want to chase and capture CAPTCHA entries.

Test scoring jobs offer some flexibility and pretty decent pay.

While you may be able to find test scoring jobs at local schools, there are plenty of resources to help you find these jobs, that you can perform without ever having to leave the house. 

Online test scoring jobs

Online test scoring jobs are great for entry-level applicants, as most of them don’t require experience. In fact, before you even get hired, you will likely end up taking some training courses. Afterward, you will even have to take an exam or two, yourself.

I have compiled a list of great sites that are hiring test scorers, pending the time of year.

#1. Pearson

Pearson is a very well known name in the education industry. They have been around for over 50 years. In fact, you may have even seen their name printed on some of your textbooks, during your school years.

Currently, they are hiring positions for online test scorers, though there may be times that they are not accepting new applicants.

If hired as an online test scorer, you will actually be considered as temporary employee.

This is amazing, because many work from home jobs are freelance jobs, which means that you don’t get the added bonus of benefits.

You will be expected to work at least 20 hours each week, and will then be eligible for health insurance.

In order to score tests for Pearson, you must live in the US, and have a bachelor’s degree of some sort.

Training will be required, but you will get paid about $10 per hour. Afterward, you will be making closer to $12 an hour. Unless you’re bilingual. In that case, you will likely start out earning a little more than most.

There is also the opportunity to earn bonuses, for going above and beyond, and doing superb work!

Wait, the ability to work from home, and get paid bonuses? Score!!

#2. Literably

Literably is absolutely one of my favorite test scoring sites! I am excited just to be able to tell you about it.

This isn’t your average test scoring site.

Think transcription.

You will not be grading math equations, but rather listening to voice files of other people, reading.

Your job will actually consist of being on the lookout for, and recording missed words, and sentences. Other errors, such as mispronounced words, are also something that you will want to be listening for.

Before getting hired you will have to take an assessment, which basically entails listening to six, sample audio files, and scoring them. Think of this as a pre-test.

You do not have to be a US citizen to work for Literably, you simply must be able to pass the pre-test.

An hourly rate of $10 isn’t bad, as a Literably scorer. But it gets better. There is also potential of earning up to $18-$20 an hour, as you prove your accuracy, and reliability!

#3. Measurement, Inc.

Regardless of which field you have a bachelor’s degree in, as long as you have a four-year degree, and are eligible to work in the United States, you qualify to apply for a temporary reader and evaluator position at Measurement, Inc.

Unfortunately, this position isn’t exactly the most flexible.

It is required that all temporary employees work on a regular basis, from Monday through Friday, throughout the entire length of your project. But you can expect completion time for most projects to be within about four weeks.

If it sounds like you may be up for the job, sign up today, as they are looking for a number of evaluators to get them through the months of March through June.

Once hired, you will be scoring a variety of testing materials. Some of the subjects that you may be scoring include, but are not limited to math, science, and language arts.

What I love about scoring through Measurement Inc., is the fact that accessing the money you have earned through them is incredibly easy.

You don’t have to hassle with transferring your funds from a PayPal account, because your money will be directly deposited into the bank account you specify!

#4. ETS

Educational Testing Services (ETS, for short) is a site that many people start off on, when becoming work from home test scorers.

The hiring process is a bit tedious, as you will have to pass two tests before you can even begin working. Pending the program, training and certification can take a full 8 hours. The good news? It’s all paid, even retests!

Fortunately, you are given 2 weeks to complete your training before you take your test, so you can take breaks at your leisure.

If you fail it the first time, most tests will allow you the opportunity to repeat the training, and retake the test one more time. So take your time, and study up!

Raters, as they are called at ETS, may be required to work at least 4 hours, per shift, so keep this in mind before applying. Though you should be allowed to pick from different shifts.

I have heard that the pay for raters at ETS is typical, to other online test scoring jobs. Starting pay is around $10 an hour, however, the more experienced raters can earn up to $20 per hour!

A bonus for scoring for ETS is that you will be hired as an employee. You will not have to worry about taxes, as they will already be taken out of each and every check, for you!

I think what makes this a popular site to work for is the fact that you will have team leaders to communicate with, should you have questions.

Grade papers online jobs

Grading papers may sound tedious, but it is a great way to earn a supplemental income. These jobs pay fairly well, for being able to work from your home office.

They also offer a fair amount of flexibility.

#5. Write Score

Write Score begins hiring scorers near the end of July, through early August. It is a must for all applicants to have a 2-year college degree, and they must also pass a qualifying test.

The essays that Write Score contractors score will be written by various grade levels, from elementary aged kiddos, to high schoolers.

And yes, you read that correctly. You are not hired as an employee, so you will be responsible for your own taxes.

Before getting hired on, you will have some hoops to pass through.

This involves quite the training process, that isn’t even paid. Once you pass the training, you may think you are good to go, but that isn’t such the case. As it turns out, many people who pass the training still do not end up getting hired. Write Score only has a need for so many scorers, and cannot accept everyone.

So let’s say you do make the cut. How much will you get paid? Well, that all depends on how quickly you work. Instead of getting paid hourly, you are paid by the tests you score. The more tests you score, the more money you will make. Though if you work quickly, it could equate to about $10 to $15 per hour.

#6. Creative English Solutions

Evaluators who are hired with Creative English Solutions will be scoring both written and spoken tests.

There is also a possibility that you will be doing more than scoring. You could also find yourself providing feedback, as well as making corrections on things like grammar, spelling, and even punctuation.

However, before we get there, let’s talk about what kind of requirements are involved.

English must be your native language.

You need to have a stable internet connection.

You must have a college degree.

This job is fairly flexible. You can work as much, or as little as you please, so long as you complete at least 10 hours of work each week. So if you have too many other activities going on one week it is completely okay to start turning down assignments, after you have already put your ten hours of work in for the week.

#7. SAT Scoring

Ah, the SATs. This could be one of the most important tests of one’s life. Well, that is if you are hoping to get into a fancy college.

College-bound folks put a lot of eggs into this basket. It is basically a way for colleges to have a little better insight on your understanding of everything that you have learned, during all of your previous years of schooling.

The written portions of the SATs do not grade themselves, obviously. This is a job for the human mind.

Before applying, know that you will need to have a spare 20 hours each week that you can devote to evaluating essays. Though there is some flexibility, as you can choose between 4 and 8-hour shifts.

One of the best things about being an online test grader for the SATs is that this job is year round. The summer months may not be as busy as the rest of the year, however, SATs can be taken virtually any time, so there is always a need for evaluators.

Chances are, you are already familiar with the ACTs.

While many students choose to take the SATs, some like the idea of taking the ACTs instead. And some even do both tests!

Similar to SAT evaluators, ACT readers will also be scoring the written parts of the college readiness assessment.

You are not required to have any teaching background, however, if you do, it is certainly a plus, and will look wonderful on your application! The ACT prefers people who are currently teaching or have previously taught high school English classes to juniors and seniors.

You do, however, need to have at least a bachelor’s degree, and live in the United States.

This work from home job, in particular, pays slightly higher than other test scoring jobs, at about $12 per hour. As if it couldn’t get better, it does. ACT rewards people who are consistently accurate, with a bump in pay.

If you found this article by searching for work from home jobs, chances are you have already come across the site, Upwork.

Upwork is not actually a test scoring company. It is actually a great place for freelancers to find paid gigs, online free.

At Upwork you can find a variety of remote jobs from virtual assistants, to blogging jobs, and even online test scoring jobs.

When I am looking for scoring jobs simply search the terms “test scorer,” and “essay scorer.”

They may not always be available but when they are you will be able to name the price you are willing to work for, and then wait for a response. Just keep in mind that you are not the only freelancer looking for gigs, so you may have some competition, and may not necessarily get hired.

In conclusion, becoming an online test grader is a great opportunity to make a little extra cash, with your college degree. 

This may not be the right job for you if you are looking for a steady income. But if you are looking for extra cash to add to your vacation fund, it’s well worth a try.
