If you’re intrigued by the thought of working from home in your jammies, for a well-known company, you are in luck. I have a bit of knowledge that I would like to pass on to you about what you need to know about one of their most popular work from home jobs.

This is that At Home Advisor chat job I mentioned earlier.

First, let me give you a quick description of the job, that was taken directly from the Apple website.

“We’re looking for tech-savvy people who can install, maintain, and troubleshoot personal hardware and software. You should be able to multitask across systems and applications, analyze and resolve a variety of complex technical issues, and comfortably navigate a Windows environment. You’ll need excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to effectively prioritize and manage your time. Because you’ll work independently from home, you’ll need the discipline and ability to work remotely from coworkers and management.”

If this sounds like something you might be interested, I have gathered more information about the job. Hopefully, these 6 points will answer most of the questions you may have about what to expect.

#1. Employee Status

First all, what makes this job super fantastic is the fact that if you get hired for the job, you will be considered an Apple Employee.

As I previously mentioned, a lot of work from home gigs are freelance, and contracted jobs. There may and or may not always be work available. Pay can vary for each gig, based on your bid. And you usually will not be given any benefits.

But as an Apple employee, you will be given a steady workload (with the possibility of overtime!), will be hired on at a base hourly rate, can receive some excellent benefits, and even get an employee discount on Apple products.

Benefits include a 401k plan, medical and dental insurance, an employee stock purchase program, and my favorite, paid time off! Because we all need to take a vacation or sick day here and there.

#2. Scheduling

So one of the perks of many work from home jobs is the fact they are often quite flexible, and allow you to work when you can, and want to. But, unfortunately, that isn’t quite the case with Apple’s work at home advisor job.

Whether you are hired on part-time, or full time, you will be expected to work a certain schedule each week. Including nights and weekends. This may be an inconvenience for those who have families, and need the flexibility.

On the plus side, the schedules change about 4 times a year. This means you will be able to bid on a schedule for the upcoming months. So if you are a planner, you can easily plan your activities 3 months ahead of time!

One thing to note about the schedule bidding is that it is basically based off of your performance. If you are new, you will find yourself at the bottom of the list, and may get stuck working unpleasant hours, as well as every weekend. But keep chugging along, and before you know it, you may find yourself nearing the top of the list, and getting first dibs on which schedule works best for you.

#3. Pay rate

There are numerous questions that prospective employees have about job positions. One of the most common questions that is asked, is what kind of pay to expect.

As with many work from home jobs, the pay for Apple’s work from home advisors can vary.

During the recruiting process you will definitely want to inquire just how much their advisors are paid, and what the potential is for getting raises. I can say that from the research I have done, most of the work at home advisors seem to start out around $14-$15 per hour, based on their demographics and experience. Though I have also seen that employees who have previous tech support have been known to make closer to $18 per hour. Not too shabby, huh?

#4. Necessary Requirements

When it comes to the equipment you will need for the job, you really do not have to worry. Many are worried about the cost of going out to purchase a new, quality computer, but that is not necessary!

Apple will supply their work at home advisors with almost everything they need. This includes a headset, and iMac, strictly for work use. I believe they will even pay for your landline, if necessary, as well as a portion of your high-speed internet service.

*Note, you must have a  reliable internet connection that meets at least 5 megabits per second download, and 1 megabit per second upload.

One thing they cannot provide you with, is obviously your workspace.

All work at home advisors for Apple are required to have a quiet workspace. This doesn’t mean a computer set up in the corner of your living room, while the kids are playing downstairs. You must have an office with a door, to help seal off other noises from around your home. They also ask that you have, or get a desk, as well as an ergonomic chair, to work from.

So a work from home job, that will even provide you with a computer to work from? It really doesn’t get much better than this, if you ask me!

#5. Is Apple knowledge necessary?

In short, no, you do not need to have prior knowledge of Apple products before applying. However, it is a no brainer that it will look much better if you have at least some prior knowledge. It can also be helpful to have previous customer service and/or tech support experience.

Regardless of whether or not you know much about Apple products, once hired, you will go through training, as mentioned.  

First of all, let me say, the training is paid! Woo-hoo!

Second, since this is a remote job, you will not have to go anywhere but your home office, to obtain proper training.

This training is done virtually, through your Apple issued computer. It is even instructed by a live person, so you will be sure to get the best training out there. No worrying about reading manuals while your questions go unanswered. The support you will receive is absolutely wonderful!

Your instructor will tell you everything you need to know about the job, from job-specific tools and processes, to advanced troubleshooting, and lessons on all of their products. You will even learn how to deliver your support to customers through Apple’s unique approach. This is part of what makes Apple, well, Apple!

All of this will be learned within about 5-7 weeks. From there, you will be ready to take your first call, and get right into work!

#6. Hiring Process

Okay, so you have decided you are ready to jump on board. Fantastic!

The hiring process is pretty simple, however, it can take some time. Some have even said it can take from 2 to 3 months, though many applicants hear back within about 3 weeks or so. But if you don’t hear back, don’t worry. You can always try a different position, or re-apply when you happen to notice the job posting is up again

Once you apply, you will likely have to wait for an email response (this is the part that can take weeks). From there, you will answer a few questions, and if they like your answers, you will move onto an actual interview process.

Since it is a work from home job, this interview process is actually done either through Facetime, or Skype, pending what kind of device you are using.

There will be 2 or 3 different Facetime interviews you will have to go through, before possibly getting an acceptance offer in the mail. Your third Facetime interview will generally be with the manager in which you will be working under, so that’s a good sign!

If you are chosen, and choose to accept the job, you will then wait for your equipment to arrive at your home, via FedEx. Once it arrives you will then go through your online training, before you can actually begin accepting chats.

Just know that this job is one of their more popular ones. When it is available, it tends to get filled quickly. So if you see a job opening for a work at home advisor, be sure to apply right away, before it’s too late!
